The Best Virtual Assistant

Should you hire a virtual assistant that lives in another country?

In my research I am finding that there are good points and bad points to having a VA in another country.

For example depending on the location you could have work completed while you sleep. And the economy may allow for a reduced out of pocket expense.

On the down side if phone communication is important then foreign assistants might need to be screened first.

What are your thoughts?

As a Virtual Assistant with clients in different time zones, I think that it definitely has its advantages. I can work later than my clients and start work later in the day. I can have the work done before the client is even up in the morning. I am in the Atlantic timezone, and so I am usually at least 1 hour ahead of everyone else in North America. As with any decision, there are always pros and cons depending on your specific needs and expectations.

I have utilized the services of VA's in Canada, the U.S. and India.

My experience with the VA in India has been nothing short of exceptional.

Time, cultural and language differences have posed no challenges.

The best way to find a VA that complements your character and meets your needs is to ask for referrals from respected colleagues.

If that's not possible, interview several VA's and make your needs clear. Follow-up with references for each.

A huge mistake I made in hiring my first VA was not verifying her references. She had posted testimonials of several high profile business people on her web site and that was good enough for me.

Later, after receiving horrific work, I discovered those who had previously provided testimonials had fired her for incompetence.

An expensive lesson learned.
